A quick round-up of movies I’ve watched lately

09.27.06

At least the ones I can remember…

We recently upgraded our digital cable subscription to include HBO (for free!), so it’s increased my movie watching. I’ve actually been pretty discriminatory, thanks to our trusty DVR.

In no particular order:

  • Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story - Funnier and smarter than I thought it would be. Ben Stiller will go to great lengths for comedy. Watch the entire credits sequence and you’ll see.
  • Closer - Cynical, sad and with no characters I would say I truly liked. It was nice to see Julia Roberts play a character that wasn’t universally loved (and that described sexual acts prolifically - there’s a certain naughty thrill in seeing America’s sweetheart say those things).
  • Fitzcarraldo - Werner Herzog directs his muse, Klaus Kinski, in this film about a turn of the (20th) century entrepeneur who is determined to open an opera house in the jungles of South America. It’s captivating, funny and strange. I found it worth watching to 1) watch Klaus Kinski’s incredible face and 2) to see an enormous steamboat actually moved over a mountain.
